This Side Of Heaven
Theology is such an interesting thing to study. It’s very difficult. Take one sentence out of context or translate one Hebrew word slightly different and you’ve changed the entire meaning of a passage in the bible. It’s nerve-racking. I mean, we are using these words to live by so I can see why so many scholars spend their lives trying to figure every detail out. Sometimes these details can lead to very heated arguments about what is right and wrong. When I started to write this song, Bin Laden had just been captured and killed. I had just turned on my phone after a show and saw everyone on Twitter talking about it. At first, all you saw was excitement and celebrations. Obviously, this guy was very evil and everyone was thankful he was gone. Then, all of a sudden I noticed people posting about how we shouldn’t have done this and that God would have never wanted us to murder this man. Both sides started backing up their claims with scripture. Both sides had a fair argument. What both sides may not remember is that there are some things we just won’t know THIS side of heaven. Does that mean we shouldn’t strive to learn the word of God? No way. Read it every day and let Him speak to you. Just remember that God’s plan is bigger than the small box of our common sense and logic. His ways are not our ways and He is always in control. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
Lyrics:
Everyone’s got their own opinions
There’s nothing they don't know about
But in the end nobody's winning
'Cause nobody's got it figured out
CHORUS
Oh the things we think we know
But honestly we really don’t
This side of heaven
Save the worry, stop the hate
It doesn't matter anyway
This side of heaven
You can make your own decision
You can write it on a sign
But when it feels like something’s missing
Listen up and I'll tell you why
CHORUS
I remember how He showed me
Love is first above all
And that judgment should come slowly
'Cause we all have our faults
