It's Always Been You
A friend of mine from Dallas, Shelby Cook, told me I should write a song called It's Always Been You. Naturally, since he is a songwriter, we decided to write it together. It just so happened that another Dallas friend, Ryan Edgar, was hanging out that evening and got in on the songwriting. We hadn't created any of the story and didn't yet know what it would be about...we just knew it would be called It's Always Been You. Someone threw out the idea that it should be a song that could be sung to God or a girl, but since I personally not into that, I decided it should be about God. After all, He is the only one that is truly always there for us. Quick disclaimer: I do write and enjoy love songs. There are a few on my album.
We started talking about the many ways God helps us through situations. These ideas naturally became the verses of the songs. After we had written the verses and bridge we worked out a chorus. I recorded a demo of the song and it sat in my repertoire for a few months while I started writing the rest of my record.
I would always come back to this song because I loved the verses so much. My only problem was that I felt like the chorus wasn't quite right and didn't stand out. Since I had the writing genius of Ed Cash at my fingertips, I asked him to come up with some ideas for a brand new chorus. He delivered. After hearing his idea and working it out with him, we had ourselves a song.
Lyrics:
It's always been you from the day that I saw you
From a heart that was broken I was changed into something brand new
Like a butterfly learning how to use my wings to fly like the wind
Gotta make it home again
It's always been you seeing deeper than the surface with a smile you demolish all my walls you can always break through to the heart of the matter no matter what I try to do
When I hide from the sun you come and change my point of view
I'm sorry for the things I've done
When You ran to me I turned to run
But You were waiting when I came undone
And needed me someone to hold onto
It's always been you in the heat of the moment
When the pain was so real and the scars on my heart were still wounds
I gotta stop hiding from the one thing that’s left to do
I know what I gotta do
I wake up I wake up to the morning light to the morning light
I wake up
I wake up cause you shine so bright
