I'm Gonna Sing
There was a guy in town that I really wanted to write a song with, but he was always busy. Lucky for me, he is one of the worship leaders at the church I attend. His name is Jason Ingram. He has written countless hits and has an amazing ear for melody. After hounding him a little at church, I finally talked him into fitting me into his already busy schedule.
I had a couple really good ideas that I was saving for him. Of course I wanted to impress him. I figured I would come in to the writing session and let him choose which one he wanted to work on. However, the night before we would write, I decided to just have a night of worship by myself. I just pulled my guitar out and started singing to God. It was then that the chorus of 'I'm Gonna Sing' was brought to existence. It didn't have the chord movement and the lyrical wordplay that I wanted to bring to Jason in hopes to get his approval as a writer, but it did have the anointing of God. I felt it very strongly when I sang through the simple lyrics.
We ended up writing and finishing 'I'm Gonna Sing' during our writing session the next day. He helped me mold it into a song that was even better than when I started it, but still kept the beautiful simplicity of a worship style lyric to God.
